Tiverton
Tiverton is situated in the
southeast portion of Rhode Island,
in Newport County. It is bounded on
the North by the City of Fall River,
MA on the East by Fall River and the
Town of Westport, MA on the South by
the town of Little Compton and on
the West by the Sakonnet River and
Mount Hope Bay. The town is roughly
rectangular in shape for the length
in a North-South direction of about
eight miles and the width of
approximately four miles. The total
land area is 31.43 square miles.
Early settlements came in 1631. Tiverton was
founded as a township by the General Court of Plymouth, MA in 1694
and incoporated as a Town in 1747. Originally, the northern
boundary went as far as the present center of Fall River and as late
as 1862 part of it was taken back by Massachusetts.
The town of Tiverton has several sites to
provide recreational facilities for all age groups. Including fort
Barton Revolutionary site, which contains approximately 80 acres of
nature trails and provides on of the finest views in the State of
Rhode Island.
Tiverton’s industry is about fourteen hundred
acres are devoted to the farming of potatoes, vegetable seeds,
apples and dairying. Fishing is one of the more prominent
industries. About ten thousand acres in town are woodland but are
not commercially worked.
