New Bedford
Its residents see the City of New
Bedford as a wonderfully diverse and
culturally rich community with a
proud past, present and future. The
whaling capital of the world in the
18th century, the city has evolved
to become the home of many major
industries, which manufacture
products used throughout the United
States and abroad. The city prides
itself on its working waterfront and
historic district, as well as its
expanding retail and tourist trades.
Visitors from all over the country
flock to this city by the sea to
tour the historic Whaling Museum,
which explores the worldwide history
of whaling and includes the 66-foot
skeleton of Kobo, a juvenile Blue
whale. Downtown is more than just a
slice of history, it has become a
boon for business. The UMass
Dartmouth center for performing and
visual arts is located in the
historic and restored Star Store
Building.
You could spend the day shopping,
visiting a museum, seeing a play at
the Zeiterion Theatre or dining in
one of the dozens of ethnic
restaurants. For children, the local
libraries consistently sponsor
reading groups; and there is a very
popular youth athletic program open
to all city residents. With just
over 12 miles of coastline and
natural deep-water port, New
Bedford’s ties to the sea are
forever locked in place. A fishing
fleet of 350 vessels brought in
catches worth the highest dollar
value in the country; making New
Bedford the number one fishing port
in the nation.
One of the most technologically
advanced airports in Massachusetts,
New Bedford’s Municipal Airport,
features two 5,000 foot runways, a
state-of the art manned tower, and
is the training airport of choice.
While it is a city of approximately
100,000 people, New Bedford
maintains a close-knit community
feel. Named one of the top ten
“Green Cities” in the country, New
Bedford residents feel that its
parks are breathtaking and its
beaches gorgeous. Enhanced with
festivals and celebrations
throughout the year, New Bedford is
a wonderful place to visit. The
unbeatable quality of life relished
by residents makes New Bedford an
even better place to live and raise
a family.
New Bedford offers a home to suit
just about every taste. Many were
built during the whaling era.
