Fairhaven
The Town of Fairhaven is a suburban
/ fishing / resort community on
Buzzard’s Bay. Until the middle of
the 18th century, the town’s economy
was agricultural. Beyond that point
there is a shift toward maritime
activities such as shipbuilding,
whaling and foreign trade focusing
on the town wharves.
The first naval battle of the
American Revolution took place off
Fairhaven’s shores in 1775. A fort
was built for protection of the
harbor but was destroyed. It was
later rebuilt and named Fort Phoenix
after the mythical bird raised from
its own ashes.
Town benefactor Henry Huttleston
Rogers bestowed several buildings in
Fairhaven, including the Rogers
School, Fairhaven High School, the
Millicent Library, Town Hall and the
Unitarian Church. The stretch of
Route 6 boasts restaurants, shopping
plazas commercial businesses and
more. |
